The Smoothboard can be installed in a variety of ways and on many surfaces. This is what makes the Wiimote IWB so unique compared to commercially available IWB's. This page present each option, equipment required and known issues.

Contents

Essential Equipment

Regardless of your installation this is the essential equipment you will need

Display Options

LCD Monitor/TV

Additional Equipment

  • Screen protector (you can purchase large screen protector from ebay)

Known Issues

  • Without screen protector IR-Pen can scratch screens
  • Excessive pressure can damage the LCD
  • Some screens are not very stable, and may be pushed over - consider secure mounting
  • Excess screen movements will requiring re-calibration

Laptop

Additional Equipment

  • Screen protector (you can purchase large screen protector from ebay)

Known Issues

  • Without screen protector IR-Pen can scratch screens
  • Excessive pressure can damage the LCD
  • Excess screen movements will requiring re-calibration consider securing screen

Cathode Ray Tube Monitor/TV

Due to the convex structure and static build up of CRT's they produce very poor results. Not recommended for anything more than initial testing.

Rear projector screen

Additional Equipment

  • Rear projection screen (a cheap white plastic table cloth, stretched in a frame works perfectlyl)
  • Projector
  • The Wiimote can be positioned infront of the screen or better behind the screen (providing superior tracking)

Wall

Additional Equipment

  • Wall suitable for projecting
  • Projector

Known Issues

  • Depending on the surface IR-Led on IR-Pen can wear down affecting the life and quality of IR_Led - consider selecting a smooth surface
  • IR-Pen will scratch/damage wall, consider protecting surface

Floor/Table/Horizontal surface

]

Additional Equipment

  • Floor/table suitable for projecting
  • Projector
  • Stand/tripod/method to provide a vertical position for projector

Known Issues

  • Depending on the surface IR-Led on IR-Pen can wear down affecting the life and quality of IR_Led - consider selecting a smooth surface
  • IR-Pen may scratch/damage soft surfaces - consider protecting surface
  • Difficulties in setting Projector on the negative vertical axis - consider using a tripod

Whiteboard

Additional Equipment

  • Whiteboard
  • Projector

Known Issues

  • Some whiteboards have low glare properties affecting tracking of IR-Pen - consider a high quality IR-Led

Projector Screen

Additional Equipment

  • Projector screen
  • Projector

Known Issues

  • Excess screen movements will requiring re-calibration - consider securing screen
  • Some screens have low glare properties affecting tracking of IR-Pen, suggest using a high quality IR-Led
  • Mobile tripod screens can achieve reasonable success by using the IR-Pen floating over screen to prevent movements

Wiimote IWB for special needs populations

A key characteristic of the Wiimote IWB and Smoothboard is its ability to be customised allowing it to meet the needs of special populations. Wiimote IWB for special needs populations identifies key barriers to accessing all IWB's and strategies to overcome these barriers with the Wiimote IWB considering both IWB instillation option and IR-Pens. This allows access to interactive technology for all.

Tips for testing/assessing the Wiimote IWB

If you are setting up a Wiimote IWB for the first time to assess the concept and your computers compatibility we suggest:

  • Using a #Laptop with internal Bluetooth or a #LCD Monitor/TV desktop already Bluetooth enabled.
  • Rest Wiimote on a stack of books or a shelf.
  • Borrow a Wiimote from a friend.
  • Connect Wiimote & execute Smoothboard. If it runs without error you know your system is compatible (incompatibility is extremely rare and has always been resolved, but we understand that people like to check before investing).
  • You can even use a cigarette lighter instead of a IR-Pen (fire emits IR light) to perform the calibration and move the cursor although this provides very limited functionality.

**WARNING USE FIRE WITH CARE**
