Tips for optimum performance

From Smoothboard

The Smoothboard and the Wiimote IWB is like anything else - user dependent. If you understand how it works and adjust what you do to suit, you will find that Smoothboard is in some ways more functional than the full cost commercially available IWB. However, if you take lots of short cuts and try to use the Smoothboard without setting it correctly or changing your teaching/instructional style to suit, you will find the Wiimote IWB to have very low functionality and difficult to use.

Setup the software correctly first time

If you just dump the files on your desktop or a random directory you will find that files may be deleted or navigating to the folder becomes tedious. Having the files in a safe location and a shortcut ensures the software works efficiently.

Use a quality IR-Pen

If you build your own or buy one, this rule stands - use a quality IR-led and a quality well placed switch.

Take some time to find the optimum location for your Wiimote

Every room is different, every setup is different and everyone interacts differently with an IWB. Try the Wiimote in multiple locations until the location of best tracking and least interference is found.

Make minor modifications to your instruction style

How you stand and interact with the Wiimote IWB whilst presenting will have a significant impact on how often you block with the Wiimotes field of view. Sometimes just rotating your non writing shoulder slightly away from the whiteboard ensures perfect tracking.

Read the software manual

Smoothboard provides some deep functionality that is easily accessed by customizing settings files for quick switching between settings. The manual will explain these features and explain how to maximise your Smoothboard experience.

Consider multiple IR-Pens and spare batteries

When plan A fails it is never a stress when you have plan B on standby.

Explore additional software and hardware

Much of the software and hardware is very cheap or even free. We have specifically identified software that enhances your Smoothboard experience. Often the software and hardware will improve your technology experience holistically, not just while using Smoothboard.

Seek support
